Yes it’s a real thing! Chocolatey goodness made with avocado rather than dairy. And it doesn’t taste weird; very important when you’re selling this healthier dessert to a 7 year old.
I found a recipe for avocado mousse in a magazine a couple of years ago, and it was pretty good, but found that the avocado flavor was really prevalent in it, unless I ate it with a lot of fruit on top. And the little one wasn’t sold.
So I tweeked a few things last night and created my own take on the dessert. I added a bit of maple syrup, which really compliments the cocoa, and dark chocolate chunks, which also punch up the flavor as well as add a bit of texture. It’s super easy, so go ahead and give it a try!
- 1 ripe avocado (soft enough to blend well)
- 1/8 Cup honey (I prefer local whenever I can get it)
- 1/8 Cup maple syrup
- 1/4 Cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 Tablespoon coconut oil
- about 1 ounce of dark chocolate (a bit more if you want to garnish)
This is so easy it’s criminal. Basically, you take all the ingredients above, stuff them into a really good blender or food processor and push the button. Blend until you have a smooth texture, save for the chunks of chocolate. Scoop into serving cups and refrigerate about an hour before you dig in. Commence to licking the bowl…it’s okay, no one’s watching and we all do it. 🙂
